Cool Surfing Video - Apocalypse Now, Surf Later

A surfing video featured on a cool stuff website called “Apocalypse Now, Surf Later” has gone viral. With the Mayan calendar counting down less than 12 months away to the end of the world, some of us may wonder where we'd like to be on doomsday. It's received 192,000 views since it was uploaded on January 8th 2012. Could the end of the world really look like this? Watch the video here....

The cool music in the video is called 'The Whales' by The Mermen from their 1989 album 'Krill Slippin’.

YouTuber keef70 shot the video on a GoPro camera in Sunset Point (LA) and created the video effects on his iMac. The video is imagined through the eyes of a fearless surfer, the scenario set the scene for an eerie video that's sweeping the web. Surfers straddle their surfboards and drift with the tide, taking in the scene as as airships float in from overhead.

'The surfers decided to stay behind and if this is their last day alive, they're going to die doing what they love,' the filmmaker wrote. Meteors fall from the sky trailed by blazes of fire and smoke, crashing into waves and raining down ash. The scene was set with several animation tools, with effects done in Maya, motion tracking in Mocha and compositing done in After Effects, according to the filmmaker.

'I purposely left it in a grey area (no pun intended) so people could interpret it their own way.'

'But the original storyline had more of a 'we brought this on ourselves' idea rather than an invasion from an external enemy,' he wrote.

Biggest Wave Ever Surfed - 90ft surf caught on camera

Mind blowing surfing video of Garrett McNamara breaking the world record for the largest wave ever surfed (90ft or 27.4 metres).

The previous biggest wave surfed record of 77ft was held by Mike Parsons since 2008 (from the Billabong Odyssey movie).

Garrett McNamara is a Hawaiian big wave rider caught the huge monster in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, during the ZON North Canyon Project 2011.

The wave caught by McNamara is estimated to be about 90 feet (30 meters). Garrett was tow-in surfing with Andrew Cotton and Al Mennie when he suddenly caught this giant wave. Watch the biggest wave of all time, here.

"Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves. Cotty and I surfed two big waves of about 60 feet and then, when Garrett was ready came a canyon wave of over 90 feet. The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was amazing. Most people would be scared, but Garrett was controling everything in the critical part of the wave. It was an inspiring ride by an inspiring surfer", says Al Mennie.

This was not the first time that Garrett McNamara rode giant waves at Praia do Norte, which is under the influence of a phenomenon known as "Nazaré Canyon" that creates unusual giant waves.

The conditions of swell and wind direction observed on McNamara's big day were quite special. The local maritime authorities registered a wave of about 8 metres off Nazaré coast, in one of the buoys. With a WNW swell direction and a favorable wind, the canyon does the rest

"I feel so blessed and honoured to have been invited to explore this canyon and its special town. The waves here are such a mystery", says Garrett.

Photos from Andy Irons memorial service where thousands turned up to say their farewells to the legendry surfer. Eeveryone in Andy’s life was there - family, childhood friends, fans, along with most of the top 44 surfers in the world came together to honor Andy.

Bruce, Danielle, Lyndie, and baby Andy Irons - With the birth of his son only weeks away, Andy’s legacy lives on.

As Andy's brother Bruce Irons stood up, the crowd erupted, splashing water in the air, cheering, and clapping. With emotion and poise, Bruce spoke to the group. “Andy loved all of you here,” he yelled. Tears streamed down everyone’s faces, as they applauded and chanted, “AI…AI…AI…” Overhead, a helicopter circled and dropped thousands of flowers over the procession. Bruce told the crowd that this is what Andy wanted, for his ashes to be spread outside of Pinetrees, and for everyone to celebrate. Choking back tears, Bruce took out the container carrying his brother’s ashes and emptied half into the water. Then, with his arm around Andy’s pregnant wife, passed the rest to her so she could bid her final farewell to her husband. With their faces in their hands, the crowd huddled tightest around the boat sobbed.

In accordance with Andy’s wishes, the crowd didn’t form a hand-in-hand circle, but instead gathered just outside the sandbar at Pinetrees and surrounded the boat carrying Bruce, his wife, and Andy’s wife, Lyndie. On Jet skis nearby were Andy’s parents, Phil and Danielle, huddled around them in the water were all of Andy’s closest friends, on nearby canoes were family members, and surrounding all of it were hundreds of other friends and members of the community.

Surf pictures and videos tribute to Andy Irons who was tragically found dead aged 32 this week. The 3 time world champion was made famous by his epic battles with Kelly Slater. Here are some pictures of Andy doing what he did best!

But outside all the victories Andy's life started to take a turn and his fire was starting to go out. He left the sport in search of himself and took it all back to basics. "i surf because... it keeps my life at an even keel, without it I would tip into oblivion"- ANDY IRONS. Watch this revealing clip of one of surfings most colourful dynamic characters.

The 32-year-old was reported to be suffering from dengue fever and had missed a flight home to Hawaii when he was found by hotel staff. Earlier this week Irons, a legend in the surfing world, had pulled out of a world surfing tour event in Puerto Rico because of illness.

Andrew Flitton, a spokesman for Irons' main sponsor Billabong, told Australia's Surfing Life that Irons first flew from Puerto Rico to Miami, where he spent two days on an IV drip. He then insisted on returning to Hawaii to see his own doctor, but became sick and missed a connecting flight from Dallas, the magazine reported. The Association of Surfing Professionals confirmed his death.

"He had reportedly been battling with dengue fever, a viral disease," the ASP said in a statement.

Irons, who was the only surfer to challenge nine-times world champion Kelly Slater, leaves behind a heavily pregnant wife. A statement from his family thanked his friends and fans for their support, and asked for privacy "during this time of profound loss".

Irons had won a total of 19 world tour victories and was crowned world champion in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He was the only professional surfer to win at every location on the world tour.

His most recent tour victory was in September, when he won the Billabong Pro in Tahiti. Dave Prodan, ASP international media manager, said that Irons' death was a massive blow to the sporting community.

"This is in my opinion one of the most devastating losses, not just to the surfing world, but to the international sporting community in general," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Obviously Andy was more than just a three-time ASP world champion. He was a hero to literally millions of kids who surfed and who didn't surf around the world, and to grown-ups as well.

"I can't imagine the impact this is going to have but it's certainly something that we will feel the world over for many years to come."

Andy Irons, who grew up on Maui, was known for his powerful and stylish surfing. Mr Prodan said: "I think people will remember Andy for his unparalleled ability and overall comprehensive approach to surfing. "He never compromised anything, whether it be his approach, or his competitive tactics or anything."

Claire Bevilacqua nicknamed "Bevo" is a professional women surfer from Perth, Australia. Her mother is Australian while her father is Italian. In 2003 she was crowned as the Australian Junior Women's Champion. In 2005 she joined the World Championship Tour (WCT) of the Association of Surfing Professionals, finishing with a 10th ranking. Since turning pro she has won several competitions including The Outer Banks Pro in North Carolina, The Hello Kitty Boardfest at Huntington Beach, California and the 2009 Pipepline Pro. I had in mind a photo of surfing using a flash slave, separate from the camera, and I waited for a perfect day with a beautiful sunset background to bring more color in the photo. I asked a friend to hold the flash for me as I held the camera, and my surfer friend was wearing a red wetsuit to make it more colorful.”

Story behind this wave.....

In early December 2009, Super Typhoon Nida was dying in the North Pacific (that's her in her prime below). She was a real beaut - 175 mph winds, lots of energy. Some of that energy ended up in what could be a record-setting wave in Hawaii.

As Nida lost steam, another system called "97W" was beginning to organize just below her. Both storms are visible here:

What happened next created what some predicted would be the biggest waves Hawaii had seen in 40 years.

As Nida lost her mojo, her energy was absorbed into 97W creating a massive low-pressure system similar to a nor'easter. Before the storm fell apart, it pumped out a huge swell that landed in Hawaii three days later, on the morning of Dec. 7. The result was a wave that only two surfers were both brave enough and in a position to catch.

By the way - when they ask if this is the biggest wave ever caught, they're talking about paddling into a wave without the use of a jet-ski. In other words, this isn't the biggest wave ever ridden...that likely happened on Cortes Bank in January of last year (that wave was judged to be 77 feet high) and was caught with the towing abilities of a jet-ski.

But the wave you see above *could* be the biggest wave ever ridden by simply catching it via paddling with your arms and legs. This video is an entry in Billabong's annual big wave competition, so we'll probably hear from them this summer on exactly how big they think the wave was.

Edward Ryon Makuahanai "Eddie" Aikau (May 4, 1946 March 17, 1978) is one of the most respected names in surfing. He was the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay on the island of Oahu. He saved many lives and became well known as a big-wave surfer. "Eddie" was a true symbol of Aloha.

Born on the island of Maui, Aikau later moved to O'ahu with his family in 1959. In 1968, he became the first lifeguard hired by the City & County of Honolulu to work on the North Shore. Not one life was lost while he served as lifeguard at Waimea Bay. Eddie braved surf that often reached 20 feet high or more to make a rescue. He became very famous for surfing the bigHawaiian surf and won several surfing awards including First Place at the prestigious 1977 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. The local saying, "Eddie Would Go," refers to his stoke to take on big waves that other surfers would shy away from and his courage to make a rescue in impossible situations.

"Eddie" became involved in perpetuating his Hawaiian heritage. In 1976, the Polynesian Voyaging Society sailed the Hokule'a on a successful 30-day, 2500 mile journey following the ancient route of the Polynesian migration between the Hawaiian and Tahitian islands. In 1978, a second voyage of the traditional sailing canoe was planned. At 31 years of age, Aikau was selected for this voyage as a crew member. The Hokule'a left the Hawaiian Islands on March 16, 1978. The double-hulled voyaging canoe developed a leak in one of the hulls and later capsized in stormy weather about twelve miles south of the island of Molokai. In an attempt to get to land to save his crew and the Hokule'a, Aikau paddled toward Lanai on his surfboard. Hours later a commercial airplane spotted the Hokule'a and the rest of the crew was soon rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Aikau was missing at sea. Despite great search efforts "Eddie" was never seen again.

North Shore this week is getting a huge swell and here are the pictures. Thousands of spectators and surfers are flocking to Hawaii's beaches to see the biggest waves in years crash ashore. Heavy traffic backed up for miles yesterday along roads leading to Oahu's North Shore. Some of the world's most daring surfers took on the powerful and dangerous waves, which forecasters say could reach heights of 50ft (15 metres) by tomorrow.

The surf grew so large that a few beaches on Oahu and Maui were closed because lifeguards feared inexperienced sightseers could drown, according to state officials. As violent as the waves were, they are expected to growth in strength, according to the National Weather Service. The high waves are expected to continue throughout Wednesday.

A legendary big wave surfing contest, the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, may be held today for the first time since 2004 if waves reach a minimum of 40 feet (12 meters), organisers said. The event is only held in perfect conditions, and the waves weren't quite big or smooth enough on Monday.

'The swell energy is continuing to grow, and the waves may get larger,' said Robert Ballard, a forecaster for the National Weather Service. 'A large storm over the North Pacific has sent a wave train at us.'

Hawaii hasn't seen such large waves since 2004 or 1998, he said. Teams of tow-in surfers - who use jet watercraft to race into waves too big to paddle - are flying to Maui from Brazil, South Africa and Australia, The Honolulu Advertiser reported.

The Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest was postponed because the surf did not reach the 30-40 foot wave high requirement yesterday. But forecasters say waves could reach heights of 50 feet (15 meters) by tomorrow, with plans to hold the surf contest today.

An A to Z of surf speak. Surf speak has been around almost as long as surfing and can be traced back as far as the 1920s but it was in the 1950s, with the explosion of surfing in the USA that the language of surf really came into its own.

With mainstream bands such as the Beach Boys and films such as Gidget (1959) there was no stopping certain words and phrases creeping into the English language at large!

As an example of surf slang we can describe the action in the photo to the right. What you see here is 'some dude on a sponge has wiped-out and is going over the falls on a hollow little right'

A to Z of Surfing

Air
A surfing manouvre where the surfer becomes airborne. Advanced stuff and requires excellent timing and speed

Aerial
See air above

A-Frame
This is where a wave forms in a peak and breaks both ways. The name comes from the fact it is A shaped before it breaks

Backdoor
This is where the surfer takes off on a wave on the far side of the peak. He then proceeds to surf through the barrel. Backdoor is also the name of the right-hander that breaks off the famous Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii.

Backhand
To surf a wave in the direction that means your back is towards the wave. Usually considered more difficult than forehand but easier for some manouvres

Back off
This is where the wave goes from being steep and surfable to being flat and lacking power. It usually accurs when the wave breaks and then hits deeper water

Bail out
To jump or dive off your board when the going gets sketchy - this is usually on the paddle out when confronted with a wave too big to get under

Banks
These is how the sand forms on the sea bed and are what determine the shape of the wave above. Without good banks the surf is at best pretty!

Barrel
One of a variety of names for one of surfing's ultimate goals. Can be used as a noun or a verb, both refer to the hollow part of the wave formed when the top travels faster than the bottom.
The trick is to get into the barrel and is thus be barrelled!

Beach Break
The clues in the name! A wave that breaks at a beach (some don't)

Bomb
A particularly large wave

Bombora
Australian term for a large wave that breaks a long way out to sea on an offshore reef or sandbank. AKA Bommie

Bonzer
A surfboard with no less than 5 fins! Invented by the Californian Cambell brothers in the 70s occasionally makes an appearance in modern designs

Carve
When a surfer performs a long, smooth, often powerful longer turn

Clean
You want clean waves! This doesn't mean there is no poo in the water but that the waves are smooth and breaking well due to offshore winds. The opposite is messy when the wind blows onshore making them ragged

Close out
Waves are supposed to break accross - either left or right. A closeout is where the whole wave breaks at once. A very short ride!

Concave
The concave surface of the bottom of a modern surfboard. It helps increase speed

Cooking
Very good surf conditions

Cranking
As above

Cutback
An S shaped manouvre where the surfer changes direction on the wave to head back to where the power is. This is followed by another change in direction back down the line

Drilling
This is what big waves do to you after you fall off!

Drop knee
A style of bodyboarding where the surfer rides on one foot and one knee somewhat like a rifleman would stand.

Drop in
This is an unspeakable act in the surfing World! It is where a surfer is already on a wave (and thus has priority) and another surfer takes off on the same wave. Depending on who does it and where this can sometimes result in violence!

Dude
Not strictly speaking only a surfing term, but for years this was the only place it was used. Strangely enough the word originally meant a tramp /scarecrow

Elephant Gun
A surfboard designed for very big surf

Face
The front of the wave where it hasn't broken - the blue/green part you can see

Fin
The protruberances on the bottom of most surfboards. Used to just be the one, now they usually come in 3s, sometimes 4s and occasionally 2s and 5s!Their purpose is to create latteral resistance or in other words stop you going sideways

Fish
A short wide surfboard designed for surfing small waves

Floater
Where the surfer rides over the top of the broken part of the wave as opposed to the face

Forehand
To surf a wave in the direction so that you are looking towards it. Generally considered slightly easier than backhand

Glassy
Conditions where there is no wind and the water surface becomes so smooth it resembles glass. This is a good thing!

Gnarly
Scarey, bad or dangerous

Goat boat
A fond term for a surf-ski

Goofy foot
If you stand with your right foot forward you are a goofy footer!

Green Room
70s term for a barrel / tube

Gremmie
Someone who can't surf very well

Grommet
A young surfer

Gun
A surfboard for riding big waves. Long, thin and usually a pintail

Hang Five
Old school longboarding move where the surfer hangs the toes of one foot over the front of the board

Hang Ten
As above but... well you can probably work it out!

Heavy
Powerful waves are described as heavy as this is how it feels if they break on your head!

Hollow
Tubing / barrelling waves are hollow - duh!

Inside
Waves often get steeper and faster as they come in - this is the inside section

Keg
A more recent word for a barrel

Kneeboarding
A frankly odd form of surfing where the surfer refuses to stand up or lie down but kneels instead. Harmless but not natural!

Kook
Pronounced 'kuke' refers to someone who surfs badly and is generally a bit of an idiot

Layback
A manouvre where the surfer lies back into the wave. Popular in the 70's

Leash
The cord that attaches surfers to their boards. In the old days surfers spent a lot of time swimming!

Legrope
Another name for a leash

Line up
This is where you sit when you're waiting for waves. It's usually just a bit further out than the waves break. It also refers to your position up/down the beach and what landmark you use to position yourself

Lip
What people often refer to as the crest. This is the part that plunges forward when the wave breaks

Log
An alternative, slightly derogative name for a longboard

Longboard
A long surfboard! Not to be confused with a gun, these are boards designed for small / medium waves with a rounded nose and are generally 8 ft long or more

Loose
A surfboard that turns easily - better for smaller waves

Macker
Derived from the american Mac truck this means a big wave

Mal
Usually refers to a longboard,Not to be confused with a Malibu surfboard, which is any stand up board

Mat
A term used to describe a bodyboard by those who are not fans

Messy
The opposite of clean of course! Referring to waves this is when the wind blows onshore and spoils the form of the wave giving it a ragged appearance. Not so good for surfing on

Offshore
The ideal wind direction. This blows into the face of the wave, smoothing it and holding it up so it breaks later and with more power

Off the lip
A surfing manouvre where the surfer turns the board up to the top of the wave and pivots on the breaking part (the lip). The steeper the angle up the wave the better

Off the top
As above but instead of pivoting the surfer draws a longer turn across the top of the wave

Onshore
This is the surfers least favourite wind direction. It makes the waves messy and less powerful

Outside
The opposite of inside! The section of the wave that breaks further out to sea

Over the falls
This is a type of wipeout where the surfer falls from the top to the bottom of the wave as it breaks. Can be fun, especially if done head first!

Pearl (dive)
In this wipeout the nose of the surfers board sticks in the water bringing them to a grinding halt. Usually happens when going down a steep wave

Pin tail
This describes the rounded, or even pointed, tail of some surfboards. It is generally preferred for riding bigger and hollower waves as it makes the board more stable and the turns more drawn out

Pop out
A surfboard made from plastic injected with foam. Generally a beginners board

Quad fin
A 4 fin surfboard. Fins are arranged in 2 lots of twos, one just behind the other set. Supposed to give all the benefits of a thruster and a twin fin

Rail
The side of the surfboard and the part you are supposed to turn on. Can either be soft (rounded) or hard (angular)

Re-entry
Like an off-the-lip except the surfers returns down the wave on top of the breaking section

Regular foot
The opposite of a goofy foot - i.e. one who stands left front forward. Slightly more common

Reverse V
A keel like part on the bottom of a surfboard towards the nose. The opposite of the concave

Rhino Chaser
A surfboard designed for very big waves. Usually around 8-10ft in length. See gun

Rip (current or tide)
A strong and sometimes dangerous current formed as water flows back out to sea. If you ever get caught in one of these paddle across it, not against it.

Reo
Short for re-entry

Set
Waves like to travel in groups. The exact science isn't understood but they tend to arrive in anything from 2 to what seems like infinity if you are paddling out!

Sex Wax
The best known variety of surfboard wax. Made by Mr Zog

Shacked
Another word for getting tubed/barreled

Shorebreak
Waves that break very close to the shoreline of the beach. Often powerful and hollow but proximity to the sand can result in injury and broken boards

Sick
Rather good

Skeg
Another word for fin

Slab
A heavy reef break where the wave comes out of deep water onto a shallow reef. Always hollow, always powerful, often suicidal!

Slop
Weak, poor quality surf

Snap
A fast, sharp turn

Sponge
A somewhat derogatory term for a bodyboard

Spray
The water thrown up when a surfer does a big turn. This is the mark of a good, powerful surfer

Square tail
A surfboard with a tail that is squared off rather than being rounded.Perhaps the most common shape and ideal for pivotal turning in small to medium waves

Stick
Name for a surfboard

Stoked
To be pleased

Stringer
Wooden strip running down the center of a surfboard. Provides strength and a center line for the shaper. Some boards have double or even triple stringers

Swallow tail
This is the third main tail type. As the name suggest it is shaped like a swallows tail or like a W. The theory is it combines the features of a pin and square tail. Swallow tails come in and out of fashion

Switch foot
Someone who can surf both ways around, i.e. goofy and natural

Thruster
Name given to a board with 3 fins. Invented by Simon Anderson in the 80s it is still the most common design

Tight
A surfboard that is hard to turn. This is an advantage in bigger waves as it is less likely to wobble or do something unpredictable

Tow in
Relatively recent practice of using a jet-ski to tow a surfer into a big wave. These waves usuallymove too fast for a surfer to paddle into

Tube
Another name for a barrel or the hollow part of the wave

Twin fin
A board with 2 fins! Introduced in the late 70s this creates a very 'loose' board

Wax
Applied to the top of a surfboard to give it some grip

WAM chart
Or wave animation chart. This is an animated computer graphic showing the size of swell for the next few days. The data is usually obtained from the NOAA and is great for surf forecasts

Zog's (Mr)
Maker of the world famous Sexwax! 'For when your stick gets too slick'!

Pororoca

Twice a year, between the months of February and March, the Atlantic Ocean waters roll up the Amazon river, in Brazil, generating the longest wave on the Earth.

The phenomenon, known as the Pororoca, is caused by the tides of the Atlantic Ocean wich meet the mouth of the river. This tidal bore generates waves up to 12 feet high which can last for over half an hour.

The pororoca is a tidal bore, with waves up to 4 meters high that travel as much as 13 kilometers inland upstream on the Amazon River. Its name comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise".

It occurs at the mouth of the river where river water meets the Atlantic Ocean. The phenomenon is best seen in February and March.

The wave has become popular with surfers. Since 1999, an annual championship has been held in São Domingos do Capim. However, surfing the Pororoca is especially dangerous, as the water contains a significant amount of debris from the shores of the river (often entire trees). In 2003 the Brazilian Picuruta Salazar won the event with a record ride of 12.5 kilometers during 37 minutes.

The name "Pororoca" comes from the indigenous Tupi language, where it translates into "great destructive noise". The wave can be heard about 30 minutes before its arrival, and it's so powerful that it can destroy anything, including trees, local houses and all kind of animals.

The wave has become popular with surfers. Since 1999, an annual championship has been held in São Domingos do Capim. However, surfing the Pororoca is especially dangerous, as the water contains a significant amount of debris from the margins of the river (often, entire trees).

The record that we could find for surfing the longest distance on the Pororoca was set by Picuruta Salazar, a brazilian surfer who, in 2003, managed to ride the wave for 37 minutes and travel 12.5 kilometers. A surfer’s dream: riding an almost never-ending wave.

Surfers have only recently realized the extreme challenge of surfing the “Pororoca”, despite the fact of the large risks involved; ship waste and wreckage, poisonous snakes, to name just a few. This massive wave gives them the chance to surf and stay on their boards for an extremely long time.

The Pororoca is not at all predictable; sometimes the wave allows the surfers to cut huge turns, as if they were on the ocean, while other times it lets them drift.
